Awards are a waste of time. Sweeties handed out to those whose egos could do with a massage. A back slapping exercise of the worst kind.

Unless, of course, you happen to win one. Then they are entirely just; deserved recognition of a rare skill and hard won in the face of great competition.

So step forward the Best Travel Trade Press Feature Writer of the Year – for it is me – while there is still time to bask in glory. As you can see from the photo, I dressed up and shaved especially for the occasion (they might have warned me I as going to win).

Thank you to the Visit USA Association, which organises the competition, and to First PR and Texas Tourism for sorting out my trip to South by Southwest in the first place; it was the piece I wrote on Austin for Travel Weekly that won the award. I’ll post a .pdf here just as soon as I have it.

With any luck, that should be the last time you have to read about me on this blog, which I intend to update just a often as I can with travel related news. We’ll see how it goes.
